There’s a saying that goes something like, “If you’ve got haters, you know you’re doing something right.” I disagree. Wildly. Unless “doing something right” means being negative or insensitive or irresponsible or unaccountable or — I can go on — there’s not much “right” being done.

Since when does having people despise you commensurate with likeability? If this truly is the case, I should be able to guiltlessly say that the members of Westboro Baptist Church are doing something “right.” Most Americans loathe the Taliban, so I guess they’re doing something “right” too.

Just think a moment. Think about what’s being said. What’s being implied? If “haters” equal “doing something right,” then do lovers or admirers alike to doing something wrong? That seems like a logical conclusion to draw. Is there a metaphorical gray area that I’m missing here?

It’s obvious that some (again) negative or insensitive or irresponsible or unaccountable dreg had to come up with something to justify his actions and lay the blame on someone else. This quote does just that. It’s a way for someone to avoid considering his or her own actions. If you’ve ever said this to defend yourself and your words and your choices, I pity you.
